Bees: Nature’s Tiny Farmers 🐝
Safe, Gentle, and Essential
At Morris Family Farm, we take beekeeping seriously—not just for honey and beeswax, but for the vital role bees play in pollinating plants and supporting local ecosystems. We understand that some people may have concerns about having beehives nearby, so we want to assure our neighbors that honeybees are incredibly safe, docile, and non-disruptive when managed properly.
✔️ They’re Not Aggressive – Unlike wasps or hornets, honeybees are not naturally aggressive. They only sting when they feel their hive is threatened, and even then, they prefer to avoid conflict. A honeybee’s sting is a last resort, as stinging means they do not survive.
✔️ They Stick to Themselves – Our bees are focused on their job—gathering nectar and pollen from flowers. They are not interested in human food, picnics, or trash like wasps are. In fact, you’re more likely to notice fewer wasps around since honeybees help maintain a balanced ecosystem.
✔️ Hive Placement & Management – We have carefully positioned our hives in a way that directs bee flight paths away from homes and common areas. This means the bees will be heading straight to the flowers—not lingering around people’s spaces.
✔️ Urban Beekeeping is Thriving – Beekeeping is becoming more common in cities, including right here in Portland, Maine, where people successfully keep hives on rooftops, gardens, and backyards without issue. Many urban farms and community gardens use beehives to enhance plant growth and support local agriculture.
The Benefits of Bees in Our Neighborhood
Stronger gardens & healthier flowers – Bees naturally boost pollination, leading to more vibrant blooms and better yields for home gardens.
A thriving local ecosystem – Pollinators are essential to food production and biodiversity. More bees mean a healthier, more balanced environment.
Fresh, local honey & beeswax products – A natural, chemical-free sweetener and a key ingredient in eco-friendly products like candles and balms.
